The Viking's Tale

My longship cuts across the sea, Through storm and mist, with bravery.
With axes high and hearts aflame, We chase new lands and glory's name.

In mead halls warm, our deeds we sing, Of dragon ships and winters' sting.
The clash of swords, the victor's cheer, Resound in tales for all to hear.

Yet under starry skies, in quiet thought, I ponder the cost, the tears life's brought.
For every triumph, a price is paid, In battles fought and memories swayed.

From the Press:

As someone with a deep love for history, The Viking's Tale reads like the kind of story we forget was once a life. Danum Skald doesn't just write about warriors—he becomes them. This poem isn't draped in nostalgia or romanticized conquest. It's heavy with reflection, with the quiet reckoning that comes after the war drums fade. His voice reminds us that behind every saga carved in stone was a man with blood on his hands and grief in his chest. That balance between glory and ghost is what gives this poem its weight.

About the Author:

Danum Skald is a dyslexic poet and veteran from Doncaster. His work draws on his military service in Afghanistan and a lifelong passion for history. Writing through the imagined voices of historical warriors, Danum explores the emotions, burdens, and legacy of battle.
