Friday Feature: 10/3/25 - Melanie Whitfield
Wildflower
She walks lightly—
My little wildflower.
We sit softly among the grass
And hour turns to hour.
How I did not know
That such simplicities prove so grand,
And that the whole of my heart
Is held in such little hands.
From the Press:
Whitfield's Wildflower captures the kind of moment that defines parenthood—not by grand gestures, but through the quiet joy of being present. Her lines remind us how easily an afternoon can stretch into something timeless when shared with a child, and how the smallest of hands can hold the fullest measure of love.
There is a grace in how her work honors simplicity, showing that motherhood's most lasting impressions are often found in ordinary moments. It is this attentiveness that makes her poetry resonate so deeply, offering both a reflection and a gentle reminder of how sweet the bond between parent and child can be.
About the Author:
Melanie Whitfield is a high school English teacher, poet, and a girl mom raising two wildflowers in the Reno/Tahoe area. She published her debut book of poetry this year-- "Among Her Wildflowers" that follows her journey healing from a traumatic birthing experience and navigating postpartum. Her poetry has touched the lives of many mothers and has connected women through their experiences in this beautiful, wild, and unruly journey called motherhood. When she's not writing, you can find her traveling the coast of Northern California where she's from, "glamping" in her camper in the mountains, or attending a show at the Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival every summer. To buy her book, learn about upcoming projects, or browse poetry prints, you can follow her on Instagram or check out her website.
